The ResGen Iniative

The One Health Antimicrobial Resistance Genomic Surveillance ResGen Initiative is a network of Brazilian researchers across 15 laboratories from 8 institutions established in 2024. We are a multidisciplinary team, encompassing molecular biologists, microbiologists, bioinformaticians, biotechnologists, veterinarians, healthcare professionals, and science communicators comitted to establishing an antimicrobial resistance (AMR) surveillance network through genomics and metagenomics and tackling the emergence of AMR.

Through ResGen, we aim to establish efficient methods for collection and high-throughput screening of AMR in human, environmental, food, and animal samples through phenotypical and bioinformatics methods. We also aim to develop bioinformatics tools to tackle the so-long neglected resistance in fungi through next-generation sequencing data, allowing for AMR analyses of bacteria and fungi in genomes and metagenomes, and also curating databases to make this knowledge available to the scientific community.

The ResGen Initiative is coordinated by Prof. Dr. Lívia Kmetzsch, and vice-coordinated by Prof. Dr. Fabiana Quoos Mayer, from the Center of Biotechnology at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS). Our actions are funded by the National Fund for Scientific and Technological Development – FNDCT, the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development – CNPq, and the Brazilian Government's Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation – MCTI.
